CHAPTER ONE
ADDISON WAS PACING. She couldnât help it. It was three oâclock and Caleb still wasnât home. They had to leave for the airport in an hour and he hadnât even packed.
The doorbell rang and she hurried to answer. Lara, her son Tristanâs nanny, stood on the doorstep, rain dripping from her hair and nose.
âLara? What on earth? Come in, come in.â
Lara stumbled over the doorstep, dragging a large suitcase behind her. âIâm so sorry, Addison. I know youâre just about to leave for your holiday. But I had nowhere else to go.â
âWhatâs wrong?â Addison was trying not to panic. Lara was the perfect nanny. Her son Tristan adored her. It didnât matter they were about to go on a month-long holiday, she wanted to be sure Lara wasnât in any kind of trouble.
Lara sniffed. âI had a Sliding Doors moment. I got the earlier Tube home and Josh...â her voice wobbled â...he was in bed with the next-door neighbour.â Her shoulders started to shake.
âWhat? He what?â Addison was enraged. âThat lazy, good-for-nothing ratbag. Youâve paid the rent for how long? He doesnât even contribute and he treats you like that?â Sheâd never liked Laraâs boyfriend and now she knew exactly why.
She put her arm around Laraâs shoulders and guided her into the kitchen, pressing a few buttons on her coffee machine.
âHere, let me get you something.â The machine only took a few minutes, then she sat down across from Lara. âWhat are you going to do?â
Lara bit her lip. âIâm sorry, I panicked. I just stuffed a case and left. I know this is the last thing you need right now.â
Addison silently sucked in a breath. Lara was perceptive. Addison had never said a word to her but sheâd obviously picked up on the stress in the household.
âWhat do you need?â
Lara seemed nervous. âI was wondering... Iâll need to find somewhere else to stay. Is there any chance I could stay here while youâre away?â
Something simple. âAbsolutely. No problem at all.â She stood up. âAnd, Lara? Donât give up your holiday. You saved long and hard for that. Donât let him spoil it for you. Go, and enjoy every second without him.â She reached over and gave Laraâs shoulder a squeeze. âNow, will you be okay? Caleb and I will be out of your hair within the hour. I need to finish packing.â
Lara gave a nod and a grateful smile. âThanks, Addison. I owe you, big time.â
Addison met her gaze. âYou deserve someone who loves and respects you, just remember that.â
She walked out of the kitchen and into the large hallway just as the door opened again. Caleb. Also soaked to the skin and still on his phone.
She felt herself prickle. âCaleb? Do you knowâ?â
He gestured to her to stop talking as he continued his conversation. âFrank, I know exactly how important this is. I will deal with it. I promise you. The price of the stock wonât fall. Iâve been working on these negotiations for months. Iâm not about to let anything get in the way.â
He looked tired. His shirt and trousers were wrinkled and she knew that heâd worked through the night. He was doing that more and more now as the business had just exploded.
With Caleb, she would never need to worry about another woman. He didnât have enough hours in the day for her and Tristan, let alone another woman. For the last three years his work had been everything. Theyâd drifted further and further apart. The man she used to love cuddling up to barely came to bed any more. If he wasnât working at his office in the city, he was working in his office in the house.
