âPlenty of outlanders have scars like that.â
âYeah, but this one is unique. Sec chief Robards thinks this Ryan may be the same outlander who chilled Baron DeMannâs brother a few years ago in a gaudy house in Spearpoint.â
Baron Schini suddenly appeared more interested in DeMannâs outlanders. If their leader was the one who chilled the baronâs brother, then he was also the one who chilled her son in the very same gaudy house firefight.
âAnd if this is the outlander who killed the baronâs brother, what does that candy-ass Robards plan to do about it?â
âWhy, chill the scum and his friends on behalf of Baron DeMann, of course.â
The woman shook her head.
âYou disapprove?â
âNot at all,â the baron said. âItâs just that if this one-eyed outlander is the same one who killed the baronâs brother, then heâs also the one who chilled my son, Luca. And if thatâs the case, I damn well intend to be there to watch the bastard die.â

This world is their legacy, a world born in the violent nuclear spasm of 2001 that was the bitter outcome of a struggle for global dominance.
There is no real escape from this shockscape where life always hangs in the balance, vulnerable to newly demonic nature, barbarism, lawlessness.
But they are the warrior survivalists, and they endureâin the way of the lion, the hawk and the tiger, true to natureâs heart despite its ruination.
Ryan Cawdor: The privileged son of an East Coast baron. Acquainted with betrayal from a tender age, he is a master of the hard realities.
Krysty Wroth: Harmony villeâs own Titian-haired beauty, a woman with the strength of tempered steel. Her premonitions and Gaia powers have been fostered by her Mother Sonja. J. B. Dix, the Armorer: Weapons master and Ryanâs close ally, he, too, honed his skills traversing the Deathlands with the legendary Trader.
Doctor Theophilus Tanner: Torn from his family and a gentler life in 1896, Doc has been thrown into a future he couldnât have imagined.
Dr. Mildred Wyeth: Her father was killed by the Ku Klux Klan, but her fate is not much lighter. Restored from predark cryogenic suspension, she brings twentieth-century healing skills to a nightmare.
Jak Lauren: A true child of the wastelands, reared on adversity, loss and danger, the albino teenager is a fierce fighter and loyal friend.
Dean Cawdor: Ryanâs young son by Sharona accepts the only world he knows, and yet he is the seedling bearing the promise of tomorrow.
In a world where all was lost, they are humanityâs last hopeâ¦.
Ryan Cawdor let out a gasp and cracked open his eye.
âEverything all right, lover?â Krysty Wroth, Ryanâs titian-haired lover looked concerned.
Memories of a jump nightmare swirled around his head.
Even though the jump had been tough on him, Ryan was in top physical condition, and his ability to recover from the mat-trans jumps was better than most in his small band of travelers. Heâd experienced a bad jump dream, nothing more than that.
âBeen better, but Iâm okay,â he said. âYou?â
âIâve been worse,â Krysty answered.
Ryan believed that to be true. Her gorgeous mane of bright red hair, which usually lay flat against her head and shoulders after a jump, was full and thick, and cascaded over her shoulders like a waterfall.
She gestured to her right with a nod. âDoc didnât do so well, though.â
