Photography fulfils various functions in the life of people. One of them is the photographic documentation of cultural heritage sites and places of interest. Photographing UNESCO heritage sites is a particularly significant activity in this area.

The photo exhibition «Heritage Moment – 2023» shows author’s photographs (photo stories) of cultural heritage monuments from Russia, Arab Emirates, Finland and other countries. St Petersburg photographer Sergey Shchekotov-Alexandrov has travelled with his camera to the Republic of Mari El (Yurino settlement), St Petersburg, Dubai and Abu Dhabi (UAE), Lappeenranta (Finland).

The photo exhibition includes a section of single author’s photo images about cultural heritage from Russia, India, USA, Italy, Austria. Images from this section were shown by the photographer at the previous photo exhibitions and conversaziones of photographs of the «Heritage Moment» cycle. The photo from the Egyptian Karnak Temple in Luxor is being demonstrated for the first time.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Sergey Shchekotov-Alexandrov is an independent documentary photographer. He lives and works in St Petersburg. He specializes in shooting immaterial and material objects of culture, nature and everyday life, urban landscapes, museums. Sergey Shchekotov-Alexandrov is the author and curator of numerous mobile photo exhibitions in Russian regions. He maintains an author’s channel on Zen «Kilometres of photographic roads». Since 2021 he has been a member of the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain. S.I. Shchekotov-Alexandrov publishes author’s photo books. The photo book «Kilometres of Photographic Roads» was published In 2020, the photo book «Photographing Cultural Heritage» was published in 2021.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The collection of photographs «Heritage Moment» is a programme of S. I. Shchekotov-Alexandrov’s photographic studio to photograph and promote outstanding cultural heritage and UNESCO sites in Russia and other countries by means of photographic creativity.

This programme includes the following directions:

– publication of the books of the «Heritage Moment» cycle;

– publication of the books of the «Photographing Cultural Heritage» cycle;

– holding mobile photo exhibitions and photo conversaziones.

This photo book is the third in the series of books of the «Heritage Moment» cycle.

It consists of three sections:

– «Russian monuments of culture and history» (two photo stories);

– «Foreign Monuments of Culture and History» (two photo stories);

– «From the Photographer’s Archive» (single photos about cultural heritage based on materials of past photo exhibitions, published photo books and some new photos).

This book includes the following information: conclusion, captions and comments to subsections, captions to individual photographs, «From the history of the «Heritage Moment» photo project.

PHOTO STORY «SHEREMETEV CASTLE IN MARI EL», 2022

Sheremetev Castle is a palace and park ensemble located on the banks of the Volga in the village of Yurino in the Republic of Mari El. Being the State budgetary cultural institution of the Republic of Mari El, it is an architectural monument of regional significance.

The history of the castle began in 1812, when the village of Yurino was bought by the richest landowner of the Nizhny Novgorod province V.S. Sheremetev, the grandnephew of Count Sheremetev, Field Marshal of the Peter I. From that time on, the construction of the estate began.

1. The castle was partially built by 1880 according to the design of the German architect R. Müller in the late neo-Gothic style.
