Bridget sat next to Cody on the bed, and he sent her an excited smile.
âDad is so awesome, Mom. You were wrong about him. Heâs not the same as your dad.â
âIâm glad you like him.â But sheâd expected as much. Cody already had been building a preconceived notion of the hero his father was going to be, and all Bridget could do was keep hoping and praying that Kade didnât let him down.
âDid he tell you what my present is?â
âNo, he didnât.â
âDo you think heâll bring me something every time he visits?â
âI donât know. But this isnât about getting gifts.â
âI know. I was just asking what you thought. I asked him if he still likes you, and he said he still thinks youâre sweet and pretty. He wants to be friends with you again.â
She wished Cody hadnât brought her into it. She was already feeling the heat of being near Kade, of being far too attracted to him â¦

Family Renewal: Sometimes all it takes is a second chance
Chapter One
Kade Quinn went into shocked silence, his cell phone pressed to his ear. He had no idea what he was supposed to say to Bridget Wells, the woman on the other end of the line. Not after sheâd just told him that he was the father of her ten-year-old son.
He couldnât deny that heâd had a fling with her that fit the timeline, but conceiving a child with her wasnât in his realm of comprehension.
Struggling to process the information, he let out the breath heâd been holding. In the background, the horses he was training were nickering for his attention. But he couldnât focus on them right now. Bridgetâs news was the only thing he could think about, along with the incessant pounding of his frantic heart.
âI donât understand,â he finally said. âIf youâve known all along that heâs mine, then why are you just telling me now?â
âCody decided that he wants to meet you.â She spoke quietly, nervously, it seemed. âHeâs the one who looked up your website and got your current phone number.â
Kade remained beyond nervous, too. âCody? Thatâs his name?â
âYes.â
âHow long has he known that Iâm his dad?â
âFor most of his life. But he accepted not meeting you until now. My grandfather helped raise me, and he helped raise my son, too. Grandpa was Codyâs role model, his father figure of sorts. But then Grandpa died last year, leaving Cody lonely for paternal companionship.â After a slight pause, she said, âNot that I expect you to...â
Step up to the plate? Be the boyâs new role model? âIf that isnât what youâre expecting, then why did you call me?â
âBecause I promised Cody that I would.â
So what did that mean? That Kade could refuse to meet his son? That he could walk away unscathed?
There was no way in hell that he could ever do that. Kade had issues with his own father, a man he hadnât spoken to in years. He would never willingly mimic his old manâs behavior. âYou should have told me you were pregnant. You should have called me back then.â
âI made what I thought was the right decision at the time, given the circumstances. So please donât fault me for that.â
He frowned, troubled by her reluctance to include him in Codyâs life. She still sounded leery. âWhat circumstances?â
âYou never kept in touch, Kade. You never even called me after you left, even though you said that you would.â
âI know, but time just got away from me. Besides, Iâm bad about that kind of stuff.â
Her breath rushed out. âThatâs just my point.â
He struggled to follow her logic. âSo because I didnât call you, you didnât call me? Even after you found out that you were pregnant?â
âTruthfully, itâs more complicated than that. But I donât want to discuss it over the phone. If youâre going to come to Montana and meet Cody, we can talk about it then.â
âAre you still in the same area?â
âYes. In Flower River.â
His thoughts drifted back to the past. Bridget had attended one of his training clinics at the fairgrounds in the town where she lived. Heâd been intrigued from the start, noticing her that very first day. Sheâd been his physical ideal: a blue-eyed blonde with a curvy figure that turned him on. Mostly, though, she was just a sweet, no-frills girl whoâd never even been out of Montana.
