âBe careful,â Melissa said.
Electricity shot through her hand and up her arm where her fingers connected with Jamesâs skin.
âWhat?â He spun to face her.
Her breath caught in her throat and she struggled to focus on her words. âBe careful. If this man suspects youâre back looking for a missing SEAL, you could be in as much danger, if not more.â
Before she could withdraw her hand, he captured it in both of his. âWorried about me?â
âOf course. I wouldnât want anyone else to be hurt in the course of this investigation.â
âJust anyone?â He drew her into his arms.
Her hands resting on his chest, she sighed. âOkay, yes. Iâm worried about you.â
âWhy? Iâm a big boy. I can take care of myself.â
âIâm sure our missing friend thought the same.â
Chapter One
Cowboy, youâre the only person I can trust.
Those words had echoed over and over in James Monahanâs head since heâd received the call at two in the morning, thirty hours ago.
Heâd been at the Raging Bull Ranch for only three days, getting to know his new boss, billionaire Hank Derringer. He had been familiarizing himself with other members of Covert Cowboys Inc. and the assets available through Hankâs elite organization. The billionaire had an extensive arsenal of weapons, a computer system that would make the FBI and CIA green with envy, and some of the most decorated heroes the United States had known working for him.
Hank hired only the best. All of the members of Covert Cowboys Inc. had been raised on farms or ranches, where theyâd learned the value of hard work, honesty and caring for people and animals. Theyâd learned of truth and justice and had proved themselves, each in his or her own career field. Whether risking their lives in the military, FBI or other law enforcement agencies, CCI agents were highly respected and fully capable of defending themselves or others.
Honored to have been recruited by Hank, after having quit the Navy SEALs to spend the past two years working as a ranch hand, heâd been happy to get away from the sadness of living on the ranch where his father had died.
Jim had made the tough choice to leave the Navy and his SEAL brothers to take over his fatherâs responsibilities as a foreman on the Triple Diamond Ranch, while his father fought and ultimately lost the battle against cancer.
Once his father was gone, Jim left the ranch that held so many memories of the only other member of his family. The ranch had been the only home heâd known and a place he felt he could always come back to.
Not anymore. Every day with his dying father had been like ripping another piece of his heart out. When the end finally came, the pain the man had suffered in silence was gone. And so was the last member of his family. After the funeral, Jim severed all ties to his past. Heâd received and accepted a job on the other side of the state and determined to insulate himself from caring about anyone.
Three days after being hired by Hank, his first assignment with the Covert Cowboys Inc. had fallen into his lap with the call heâd received from Cord Schafer, or Rip Cord, as his Navy SEAL teammates had nicknamed him. Contact with Rip reminded Jim that he was not truly alone in the world. He had his brothers in the SEALs. Men he cared about and would do anything for.
âI made a mistake,â Rip had said. âI got a friend involved in something Iâm working on. Now Iâm afraid sheâll be a target. These people play for keeps. If they suspect she knows anything, theyâll kill her. Now that Iâve contacted her, I canât get hold of her to call her off. Iâm supposed to meet her at the Shoot the Bull Bar at ten at night in two days. You remember the place?â
Jim remembered. Heâd spent more than one evening drinking with his brothers after a hard day of training on the river. âWhat do you want me to do?â
