Очевидно, что для всего живого процессы жизнедеятельности по своей сути схожи, равно как и методы и технические средства поддержания жизнеобеспечения. Россия в этом плане достойно занимает ведущее место в мировой науке и технике. Понятно, что эти достижения применимы в различных сферах человеческой активности, в том числе и при содержании аквариума. Важно лишь знать об этом и усвоить основные принципы, а также технические решения, хотя бы в упрощенном виде.
Главная проблема наших аквариумистов-неудачников состоит в том, что они не знают о современном состоянии дел, мало что умеют и не хотят учиться или просто ленятся. Можно потратить много денег на прекрасное фирменное оборудование, но при недостатке знаний оно никогда не будет функционировать нормально. Это все равно что купить самый совершенный и быстродействующий компьютер и загрузить его устаревшим программным обеспечением или вообще попытаться на нем работать, не используя никаких программ.
Издаваемые у нас в последние годы книги и публикуемые статьи, как правило, основаны на информации, устаревшей на многие десятилетия, и настолько поверхностны, что не позволяют дать ответ на вопрос, что делать и каким образом. Автору приходилось сталкиваться со случаями откровенно плохого перевода книг по аквариумистике, где из-за незнания переводчиками технической специфики предмета грубо искажались основные понятия оригинального текста и технические схемы. Некоторые отечественные издания стали, по сути, сборниками различных технических описаний и инструкций по использованию тех или иных элементов аквариумной техники. Причем в них подобраны далеко не самые лучшие и совершенные образцы.
Достаточно кратко просмотреть историю развития аквариумного увлечения, чтобы убедиться, что аквариумная техника, как и все в нашем мире, претерпела в своем развитии много важных этапов. Известна масса примеров реализации различных технических устройств. Часть из них стала лишь шагом развития конструкторских идей и отмерла сама собой, как, например, паровые машины, другие получили дальнейшее совершенствование и существуют до настоящего времени.
Тем не менее одни и те же по своей сути и назначению изделия отличаются своим внешним видом, надежностью, долговечностью, энергопотреблением и другими параметрами. Однако, чтобы не создавать рекламы тем или иным производителям, торговые марки в описаниях, представленных ниже, как правило, опущены.

Учитывая важную прикладную роль очистки загрязненной воды, в том числе и для аквариумных целей, теоретическая база для каждого аспекта фильтрации разработана вплоть до мельчайших деталей на уровне энергетического обмена и межмолекулярного взаимодействия. Описывать все это в рамках научно-популярной книги бессмысленно, поэтому здесь будут упоминаться только главные понятия и технические схемы, важные, по мнению автора, с практической точки зрения. Для упрощения изложения я намеренно убрал из книги все химические уравнения и формулы, которые при большом желании можно найти в справочниках по химии и физике. Далее будет показано, что при усвоении принципов работы систем и элементов фильтрации и регенерации ничего особенно сложного в аквариумной технике, применяемой любителями, нет. Поэтому почти все, за исключением надежных насосов и компрессоров, при наличии навыков работы с простейшими инструментами и определенных знаний можно сделать собственноручно.
Еще в начале 1970-х гг. автор книги вместе со своим младшим братом Александром представил на традиционной осенней выставке, организованной Московским городским клубом аквариумистов им. Н. Ф. Золотницкого, первую частную экспозицию морского аквариума, оборудование для которого было сделано из подручных материалов своими руками.
