When Grand Springs was hit by the massive, destructive storm, everyone was thrown into a tailspin, including Sean and Cassandra. No one would have ever predicted that those two enemies would ever be in the same car, but a mudslide will do that. In those dark, terrifying hours, two people realized that underneath their stoic appearances, they were both searching for somethingâand found it in each other. And one phone call has the power to change all of that. Seanâs son, Jason, and his girlfriend, Becky, were in a terrible car accident. Jason is alive, but once his father gets ahold of him, heâd better have a good explanation or Jason will be on his way back to his motherâs before the sun rises. Cassandra is hoping she wonât have to pick sides. She loves both and is hoping to have the life and family sheâs always dreamed of, but the only way that is going to work is if Sean learns to listen and if Jason can learn to trust enough to speakâand both are as stubborn as mules. Will either be brave enough to make the first move?
Chapter Fourteen Continued
âAreâare they hurt? Was Jason calling from the hospital?â Cassandra Mercerâs earlier modesty cast aside with the sheet, she grabbed her clothing from the floor, where it had landed in a heap more than three hours ago, and struggled to get dressed. âSean? Are you going to answer me?â
âJason says heâs all right,â he said, rubbing his fingers over his cheek, rubbing the palm of his hand across his chin. âTheyâre examining Becky in the emergency room now. Damn it! Why did I let him have the Mercedes? I should have known heâd have to go showing off, speeding! Where are your keys? In the kitchen? Finish dressing, Cassandra. Iâll meet you at the car.â
She ran after him, holding her shoes under her arm as she buttoned a fresh blouse she had pulled from the closet. âDid Jason tell you the accident was his fault?â
âHe didnât have to,â Sean flung over his shoulder at her as he ran down the steps. âAll he had to tell me was that the police were with him and waiting to talk to me.â
âWell,â Cassandra said as she skidded around the corner of the hallway, âthat doesnât prove anything. Youâre jumping to conclusions again, Sean. Thinking the worst before you even know anything. Overââ
Sean stopped dead at the entrance to the kitchen, so that Cassandra barreled into his chest as he turned around to face her. âOverreacting, Cassandra? Is that what you were going to say?â
