This book is about health â how to gain it and how to keep it. Health is not a mere absence of disease, but a positive feeling of well-being which embraces mental, emotional and spiritual as well as physical health. This book is about the nutritional aspects of health, the dos and donâts of healthy eating because, quite simply, we are what we eat. By giving the body a sufficient amount of the nutrients it needs, it has the best opportunity to heal itself and to stay well.
Detoxification
The two main causes of health problems are toxicity and malnutrition. In Western society, we are overfed but under nourished. If our bodies receive sufficient good quality fuel (in the form of vitamins and minerals) then they will be aided to work more efficiently and to overcome any toxicity (substances which should not be present in the body). Similarly, if we receive insufficient amounts of essential nutrients our toxic load may be allowed to rise to levels which promote ill health.
Where Does Toxicity Originate From?
In my opinion, the main sources of toxicity are as follows:
Some toxicity in food is natural, such as solanine in potatoes. Most, however, is unnatural, such as fungicides, pesticides, colourings, flavourings and stabilizers.
Industrial emissions, cigarette smoke and exhaust fumes pollute our atmosphere.
Our drinking water is polluted by both industry and farming, as well as by the chemicals used to âcleanseâ it.
Most drugs contain toxins, including over-the-counter remedies such as laxatives, painkillers and indigestion tablets. Alcohol is a poison.
Around our homes, deodorant, perfume, skin care products, washing-up liquid and other cleansing fluids are chemically derived toxic substances, which are absorbed to a certain extent by our bodies.
Bottled-up feelings and emotions constitute emotional toxicity which in turn affects our physical well being.
Toxicity and Ill Health
It is impossible for us to avoid toxins completely. Indeed, our bodies are built to cope with a certain amount, the liver being our main organ of detoxification. Toxins are naturally removed from our bodies through urine and faeces, sweating and expiration (breathing out). It is only when these elimination channels cannot cope with this removal that the body will let us know that all is not well by producing certain symptoms.
The safest place for excess toxins to overflow is through the skin, as this is farthest away from the vital internal organs and enables toxicity to be removed to the outside world. The boils and carbuncles so common in the past were the result of toxins being eliminated through the skin. Nowadays, these are less common. Even those teenagers who live on chocolate and chips frequently have good complexions. It takes a certain amount of vitality for the body to be able to eliminate excess toxins through the skin, and many individuals do not have constitutions strong enough for this process. Health problems such as psoriasis, eczema, rashes, itching, dandruff, boils and spots are caused by this elimination process.
Even if the body does not have the vitality to use the skin successfully to eliminate excess toxins, it does not give up trying. The next safest place for it to use is the internal mucosa; that is any moist orifices open to the outside world. Eliminating in this way causes illnesses such as coughs, colds, catarrh, diarrhoea, colitis, thrush, cystitis, conjunctivitis, ulcers and heavy, clotted periods.
