Chapter One
âWhy canât I think of one word to say to him?â Meg Anderson looked down at her sleeping angel, trying to psych herself up for the conversation that needed to take place with the babyâs father.
âYouâre the best child advocate in Texas, Meg. The words will come.â Megâs best friend and business partner, Stephanie Gable, walked over and ran her finger along two-month-old Aubreyâs cheek.
âHe deserves to know about her, right?â Meg already knew the answer, but she asked anyway. Sheâd do just about anything to gain a few more minutes of courage before walking out the door.
âHe does.â Stephanieâs sympathetic tone struck a chord.
âIâm being totally unfair to her by keeping her from her father.â Tears burned the backs of Megâs eyes.
âThatâs right. If you canât do it for yourself, think of Aubrey.â Stephanie seemed to be catching on. âItâll work out.â
âWhat if he rejects her?â Meg tamped down the panic causing her heart to gallop.
âThen itâs his loss.â Stephanie didnât hesitate.
Meg made eyes at her friend. âYouâre absolutely right.â
âWhatâs the worst he can say?â Stephanie shot her what was supposed to be a nerve-fortifying look.
