With criminals on their trail and everything to lose, Mack will be there for her as any professional investigator would. And yet winning this battle has suddenly turned into something much more personal.
âYou know, Mack, Iâd have made you as a player. Whatâs the matter? Got some kind of lawyer rule against kissing a client?â
He swallowed, unsure how to answer her. The thing was, he was a playerâwhen the game was being played by his rules, which this game was not.
He allowed himself a small smile at her brazen challenge.
Watch out, Miss Martin, he said to himself. This gameâs about to change.
âWell?â she taunted.
âYou donât know what youâre doing,â he said softly, the smile still in place.
âWhat do you mean?â she asked, feigning innocence.
âOh, itâs not your fault. Youâve only had boys to play with. Itâs understandable that you donât know what youâre getting into by flirting with a man. Iâd advise you to stop now.â
âStop?â she said as a flush rose all the way to her cheeks. âI donât want to stop.â

Chapter One
Hannah Martinâs heart leaped into her throat as she waved at Mr. Jones, their neighbor, whose house was a mile away from theirs. He was watering his window boxes as she drove past.
Billy Joe had told her to be friendly with the neighbors but not to talk to them. âIf you say one word to anyone, youâll never see Stephanie alive,â heâd told her more than a few times in the past twenty-four hours.
Her mom, Stephanie Clemens, had gone into liver failure from cirrhosis a couple of weeks ago and was receiving hemodialysis while waiting for a donor liver. Then two days ago, Hannah had overheard Billy Joe, her motherâs boyfriend, talking on his cell phone. He was arranging some kind of delivery to Tulsa, Oklahoma. And from his side of the conversation, it was obvious to Hannah that the goods were illegal and very valuable. It had to be drugs.
Sheâd confronted him and kicked him out of her motherâs house, saying if he showed back up, sheâd go to the sheriff. Heâd left.
Then, yesterday, when sheâd returned from a short run to the drugstore, her mother was gone and Billy Joe was back. Heâd abducted her mom and was holding her somewhere.
Hannah growled in frustration and desperation as she pulled into the driveway of her motherâs house. Popping the trunk lid, she grabbed one heavy case of beer, leaving the other case for a second trip.
âBilly Joe?â she called as she hooked her index finger around the handle of the screen door and then toed it open enough to catch it with her elbow. âBilly Joe? Iâm back. My carâs battery died again. Thatâs why I took the Toyota.â
