âYou have got to be kidding me!â
Sebastian West scanned his proximity card for the third time and yet the front door of BioTechâthe biomedical technology company he co-foundedârefused to open. Seeing his employees moving around inside, he pounded his fist on the glass, but all of them ignored him.
âI own this company!â he shouted as his secretary walked by without making eye contact. âDonât make me fire you, Virginia.â
At that, she came to a stop and circled back to the door.
âFinally,â he sighed.
But she didnât open the door as heâd expected. Instead she just shook her head. âIâm under strict orders from Dr. Solomon not to open the door for you, sir.â
âOh, come on,â he groaned.
She couldnât be moved. âYouâll have to take it up with him, sir.â Then she turned on her heel and disappeared.
âFinn!â he shouted at the top of his lungs, pounding on the glass with angry fists. âLet me in, you son of a bitch.â
A moment later Sebastianâs former college roommate and business partner, Finn Solomon, appeared at the door with a frown on his face. âYouâre supposed to be on vacation,â he said through the glass.
âThatâs what the doctor said, yeah, but since when do I take vacations? Or listen to doctors?â The answer was never. He certainly never listened to Finn. And as for vacation, he hadnât taken one in the decade since theyâd started this company. You couldnât be off lying on a beach and also breaking barriers in medical technology. The two were incompatible.
âThatâs the whole point, Sebastian. Do you not recall that you had a heart attack two days ago? Youâre not supposed to be in the office for a minimum of two weeks.â
âA mild heart attack. They didnât keep me in the hospital for more than a few hours. And theyâre not even sure I really had one. Iâm taking the stupid pills they gave me, what more do you want?â
