It was a Tuesday morning and the Clumsies were sitting around in Howardâs office eating breakfast.
âIâve been thinking,â said Purvis, sipping his tea.
âMmm,â said Mickey Thompson, with a mouth full of toast.
âCould I have some more toast?â
Purvis put some bread in the toaster.
âI said Iâve been thinking.â
âCould I have some more juice?â asked Mickey Thompson.
Purvis passed him the juice.
âI said Iâve beenâ¦â
âCould I have⦠um⦠an enormous cake?â asked Mickey Thompson. âAnd a badger.â
There was a small scuffle.
âGo on then,â said Mickey Thompson, once theyâd finished.
âTell us what youâve been thinking.â
Purvis poured himself another cup of tea.
âWell,â he said. âIâm worried about Howard.â
âWhy?â asked Mickey
Thompson, buttering cheerfully.
âHeâs working too hard,â said Purvis, âand he seems to be in a bit of aâ¦â
âMood,â said Mickey Thompson.
âNo,â said Purvis, âin a bit of aâ¦â
âMess,â said Mickey Thompson.
âErrâ¦â said Purvis, âin a bit of aââ
Suddenly the door Crashed open and Howard rushed in, ran around in a circle and rushed out again.
âRush?â said Mickey Thompson.
âExactly,â said Purvis. âHe needs a holiday. Iâve been doing loads of research: here!â
He cleared a space and plunked down an old-looking book titled The Wise Traveller; a young-looking book called Flossy Has Fun at the Sea; a brochure headed European River Cruising; and a leaflet advertising Undiscovered Essex.
Mickey Thompson picked up the brochure and studied it.
âDoesnât it look lovely?â said Purvis, âIââ
The door crashed open again and Howard rushed back in.
âQUICK!â Howard shouted, opening cupboards and drawers.
âNO!â
âSausage?â offered Purvis.
âNO!â shouted Howard, shutting drawers and cupboards.
âI havenât got time for breakfast.â
Ortrud the elephant TRUMPETED in alarm.
âNo time for breakfast?â said Mickey Thompson, sounding shocked.
âIâM LATE!â shouted Howard, running about.
âBut Howard,â said Purvis.
âYouâre the same time as you usually are.â
Howard stopped running.
âI know, but today I needed to be early. The trouble is, I canât remember why.â
He sat down with a sigh and the Clumsies dived under the desk.
âWHAT?â shouted Howard, leaping up.
âThereâs someone coming,â whispered Purvis. The door crashed open and in came Mr Bullerton, Howardâs boss.
âYou! Howard Armitage!â barked Mr Bullerton. âYouâre late. Whereâve you been?â
âErr, Iââ began Howard.
âBe quiet,â snapped Mr Bullerton.
âSorry, Iââ
âAnd stop interrupting,â said Mr Bullerton. âAre you ready?â
âWellââ said Howard.
âYou donât look anywhere near ready,â said Mr Bullerton. âIt starts at one you know. We must catch the eleven oâclock train or we wonât get there on time.â
âThere?â asked Howard.
Mr Bullerton stared at Howard.
âYou canât have forgotten. Donât tell me youâve forgotten.â
âNo,â said Howard.
âYou have, havenât you?â
âYes,â said Howard.
Mr Bullerton went very red and stuck his face very close to Howardâs ear.
âCONFERENCE!â he shouted.
âWupf!â said Howard, jumping.
âCONFERENCE!
CONFERENCE!
CON. FER.
RENCE!â
âOh yes,â said Howard. âOh dear.â
âHow dare you oh dear?â said Mr Bullerton.
âIt isnât oh dear: itâs a Very Important event. In a Very Important place.â
âYes of course,â said Howard, âIââ
âAnd,â continued Mr Bullerton, âitâs Very, Very Important that it goes extremely well. A lot of Very Important people are going to be there.â
âOh?â said Howard. âWho?â
âME,â said Mr Bullerton, âand Iâll be watching you, Howard
Armitage, so youâd better make sure you donât mess anything up this time.â
âIâll try not to,â said Howard.
âYou will if you know whatâs good for you,â said Mr Bullerton.
âThe only thing isâ¦â said Howard.
Mr Bullerton made a growling noise in his throat.
âThe only thing is, I havenât made any arrangements for my dog. Iâll have to get him, and bring him.â
âYou most certainly wonât,â said Mr Bullerton.
âBut I canât leave Allen at home alone all night,â said Howard. âIâm sure the organisers would understand.â
âI am the organiser,â said Mr Bullerton, âand I say no dogs are allowed. Especially not yours.â He stomped out of the room and slammed the door.
Howard sat down with a groan and the Clumsies came out from under the desk.
âWhatâs going on, Howard?â asked Purvis. âWhatâs a conference?â
âItâs a kind of large meeting,â said Howard, âin a smart hotel by the sea. Weâre supposed to go there by train this morning and stay overnight.â
Purvis and Mickey Thompson started squeaking and jumping about.
