Якщо не вдаватися в подробиці, чорні дірки – це зірки, у яких усе навпаки. Звичайні зірки (у тому числі – наше Сонце) випромінюють світло, а ці – навпаки, поглинають усе навколо себе. І планети, і зірки, і навіть світло. Чорні дірки – це ділянки простору, де гравітація така велика, що навіть важко собі уявити. Звідки ж вони беруться? Учені вважають, що спочатку чорні дірки були звичайними зірками – щоправда, надто великими. Але в якийсь момент вони почали дуже швидко стискатися. Унаслідок цього всі атоми, з яких складається зірка, «побігли» до її центру. Маса зірки при цьому не змінюється, а ось об’єм зменшується в мільйони разів! Щільність речовини такої зірки стає настільки великою, що навіть маленький (менший кубічного міліметра) її шматочок не зміг би підняти жоден механізм. Стівен Хокінг – один з найвідоміших дослідників чорних дірок – підрахував, що чорна дірка в один мільярд тонн (стільки може важити велика гора) мала б розмір нейтрона або протона. У таких умовах через величезне збільшення гравітації колишня зірка перестає випромінювати світло і стає чорною діркою. Час і простір поблизу неї змінюються, причому описати все те, що з ними діється, можуть тільки фізики й математики за допомогою довжелезних формул.

Чорна дірка спочатку з’явилася на папері, коли у XVIII столітті учені Мітчел і Лаплас звернули увагу на «пророцтво», що містилося в ньютонівській теорії. П’єр Лаплас першим заговорив про теоретичну можливість існування чорних дірок.
У своєму відомому «Курсі теоретичної фізики» Лев Ландау і Євгеній Ліфшиць називали цю загадку Всесвіту найкрасивішою з усіх існуючих теорій, а Макс Борн захоплювався нею «як витвором мистецтва». Але найбільш поетично висловився американський фізик К. Торн: «З усіх вигадок людського розуму, від єдинорогів і химер до водневої бомби, найбільш фантастичним є образ чорної дірки, межу якої ніщо не може перетнути, її мертва хватка затримує навіть світло».
Та якщо чорні дірки не випромінюють світла, як же їх можна знайти? Для цього треба простежити за їхнім оточенням. Уперше астрономи відшукали чорну дірку, обстежуючи подвійні зірки (тобто такі, що обертаються навколо спільного центра). Одна зірка, що входила до такої системи, була звичайною, проте вчені звернули увагу на те, що її блиск якийсь дуже неспокійний. Своїми розрахунками вони довели, що поряд із нею знаходиться чорна дірка, яка забирає у зірки речовину. Перед тим як зникнути у чорній дірці, речовина дуже сильно розігрівалася, і якийсь час чорна дірка починала випромінювати енергію в рентгенівському діапазоні. Звичайні телескопи його не фіксували, а ось спеціально розроблені рентгенівські телескопи відразу ж показали дуже незвичну картину зіркового неба.
