The Greatest Christmas Gift
Contractor Brady Buchanon canât wait to surprise single mom Abby Webster with his companyâs Christmas home makeover prize. But once he does, the struggling waitress turns him down flat! Raised in foster care, Abby wonât accept charity. Yet when her dilapidated porch almost injures her daughter, Abby finally agrees to Bradyâs offer. As the hardworking bachelor pushes to finish the house in time for Christmas, he starts falling for Abby and her little girl. With the holidays in sight, Brady wonders if Abby will not only accept her beautiful new home, but also his wish to make her his wifeâ¦
âWhich house model do you like best?â Brady asked.
He glanced at Abby. âCome on. Stop worrying and get happy. This is supposed to be the part where you get all excited and make me feel like a hero.â
Her mouth lifted slightly at his silliness, and he felt better.
âI love that one,â she said, pointing at the plans.
âThe country cottage?â Heâd chosen that one for her the minute heâd seen it. It was simple and charming. Like her. âLook at the interior plan, too. We can change it if you like, but itâs perfect for your daughterâs needs.â
She looked up at him with those soft brown eyes. His chest expanded. She liked it. She liked it a lot. He realized then that heâd been overanxious about this home makeover, afraid sheâd regret letting him barge into her life and turn it upside down.
âYou think of everything, donât you?â she said, smiling.
That was the reaction heâd been looking for.
Chapter One
Brady Buchanon had planned his escape well. Three more minutes and he was out of here for the day.
He hurriedly tossed his tools into the back of the work truck, eager to be gone. Man, he loved this time of year! Cool, crisp and clear weather, and Christmas practically dripped from the trees.
He clicked the locks on his royal blue F-350, waited for Dawg, his faithful mutt to leap into the seat and was about to climb inside himself when his father, owner of Buchanon Built Construction Company and, by all rights, Bradyâs boss, stepped out into the late November day.
âBrady, hold up.â
Not fast enough. Brady blew out a resigned breath. He leaned a hand on the truck top and waited, though not at all patiently.
âBeen meaning to talk to you about something.â
âSure. Whatâs up?â
âThis makeover thing you do every Christmas, better cancel this year.â
The request sailed right over Bradyâs head. âToo late. I already have the recipient lined up.â
Dan Buchanon, his salt-and-pepper hair hidden under a Buchanon Built ball cap, scratched at the side of his neck. âYouâve made the announcement?â
âOn my way there now. Dad, you should see this house. Itâs bad, but Buchanon Built can make it shine.â Donating a home makeover for one needy family each Christmas was Bradyâs favorite event of the year, and the publicity was great for business, an important consideration to his father.
âI appreciate the sentiment, son, and in years past didnât mind the lost time and expense but not this year. We need all hands on deck.â
âI can work it out. Donât worry. Buchanon projects wonât suffer. The guys who volunteer can work on the makeover on their downtime or when things are slow.â
But Dan was shaking his head. âWith all the work on the schedule and the slowdowns weâve encountered, you donât have time for charity. We donât have time for charity. Jaylee just told me you still donât have a plumber lined up for the Edwards project.â
âIâm working on it.â
Irritation flashed on Danâs face. âAnd you want to pull off six paying jobs for a freebie? Forget it, Brady. Forget it. And fix the plumber problem today. No more delays. No more excuses.â
Bradyâs blood heated. He held his temper in check better these days, but no one worked him up like his dad. And vice versa. âIâm doing my best.â
